Sustainability
Cobolt Blue Energy is a values-driven organisation and our ethics underpin these values. The business was created to enable residential and commercial customers to maximise their use of renewable energy.
This means more than simply converting the highest number of customers to renewable energy.
It means looking at the entire supply chain and ensuring that it fits with our values.
Not all Solar Systems are as environmentally friendly as others!
When you look beyond the solar panels themselves and consider the individual components and the supply chain that delivers them, it is obvious that some systems are more ‘green’ than others.
The Solar Panel Supply Chain
A typical solar panel could have as many as 800 companies involved in its production and these companies tend to be spread out across the planet. This means that the carbon footprint for the cumulative distance travelled by each of these components can be extremely high.
Solar Panel Efficiency
The greater the efficiency of a solar panel, the less non-renewable energy you will use and therefore the system’s efficiency (how good it is at converting solar energy into usable electricity) has a direct effect on the carbon footprint of your home or business.
Solar Panel Durability
It seems obvious but the longer a solar panel system lasts, the fewer we need produce, and because not every component in a solar panel can currently be recycled, a longer lasting system will also contribute less to landfill.
Material Used in the Manufacture of Solar Panels
Even though the end product is a huge contributor to the green agenda, it’s an inconvenient truth that material used in some solar panels are not environmentally friendly.
If this is something that concerns you, then look into a panel’s components. Typically, they might have used lead or aggressive solvents in manufacture. Plastics used could include toxins such as PFAS (Polyfluoroalkyl substances).
Green Factories
Storage
If you are able to store excess renewable energy, it means you won’t need to default to non-renewable sources when it runs out. The storage of solar energy is more accessible and affordable than ever, meaning your home or business can be 100% reliant on renewable energy.
Cobolt Blue Energy and Meyer Burger: A partnership forged through a love for our planet.
When Cobolt Blue Energy was launched there was only one supplier of solar panels that we could seriously consider: Meyer Burger. This is because our sustainable goals are completely aligned with theirs. Meyer Burger are on their way to manufacturing the most sustainable solar modules in the world and this is why:
Meyer Burger supply chain
Meyer Burger are a Swiss company that manufacture their panels in Germany, in fact they are the only company that manufactures its panels in Germany. The company is intent on creating a community of suppliers, within Europe, to ensure that its main market can be supplied from a relatively local source. In 2024, 96% of the suppliers to Meyer Burger are in Europe, with an incredible 91% of these being within Germany itself, meaning that we can assure you of short transport and delivery routes and secure supply chains, thanks to regional partners.
Meyer Burger panel efficiency
Meyer Burger’s solar panels lead the way with technological innovations designed to increase efficiency. With patented technologies such as SmartWire and Heterojunction, MB panels can deliver up to 20% more power than alternatives.
Meyer Burger panel durability
Meyer Burger is an established company, who have been involved in the solar power production chain since the 1970’s. This means that they have the data to prove the durability of their panels. This lends itself to a class-leading 30 year guarantee.
Materials used in Meyer Burger panels
From their laboratories in Switzerland to their state-of-the-art factories in Germany’s solar valley, the focus is entirely on sustainability. As a result Meyer Burger can boast that their complete portfolio of high-performance modules contain no lead and are certified PFAS-free.
Green factories
In complete alignment with their sustainability agenda, 100% renewable energies are used in the manufacture of all Meyer Burger solar cells and modules.
Green Credentials
Meyer Burger have joined the United Nations Global Compact, which is a voluntary platform for leaders to meet and support the development, implementation and distribution of responsible business practices. You can learn more about the UNGC here.
